The clock ticks midnight and 2020 is here! This is not a common year. It’s a leap year. It’s a new decade. It’s the start of a new era. 2020 is upon us with choices and a clean slate of endless possibilities. Did 2019 end with completed projects and fulfilled promises? For many, there were some unexpected challenges and instead of leaping joyfully into the new year, there was a slower limp towards the finish line of 2019. Looking over the edge of 2019 and into the eye of the new year we have a decision. Do we carry the unfinished disappointments and challenges into 2020 as heavy burdens that weigh us down or do we move forward with eager anticipation believing that the good work that God began in us He will faithfully complete? God is faithful and His ways are perfect. As long as we stay anchored in Him, God will carry us through to the victorious other side. We will be like David in Psalms 18:29 For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall. King David is my friend and the Book of Psalms is my reading companion. Oh how I would love to interview the ruddy shepherd boy! What were his conversations like when he was out in the fields talking to God? What did David sing to Him? David is someone I can relate to. As a young, extremely shy girl in school, I would talk to God. I would hide in Him. I was told by teachers that I was a loner but I was never alone. I had God.
I knew He was with me. I would sing old time hymns to Him. “How Great Thou Art! How Great Thou Art!” The encouragement I would like to leave with you is this. God has us hemmed in. We can be secure in this knowledge. We may have unfinished struggles that will try to piggy back into this new year. But God has us hemmed in. We cannot let go of His promises and His Word. He faithfully carried us in 2019 and He faithfully will carry us in 2020. (Psalm 139:2-6) You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. Partnering with God as our anchor into this new, uncommon year filled with His golden promises and roaring with His Word in our mouth we will see His goodness in the land of the living called 2020!
